"An interesting idea!" - Giving Gifts Makes You Happier - HBR's Daily Idea

July 02, 2013

Deep down, we all know that TVs, cars, and houses won't make us happy. Even higher salaries. But, in some instances, money can make us happier. There's one important caveat, however: in order to feel a jolt of happiness, you need to spend the money on other people. In fact, spending as little as $5 can do the trick. Google knows this full well, and has set up a program that encourages its employees to nominate each other for a $150 bonus. That may seem like small change, but the emotional payoff of giving a gift (and receiving one, of course) far exceeds its monetary value.

  1. Economists have elaborated the economics of gift-giving into the notion of a gift economy. By extension the term gift can refer to anything that makes the other happier or less sad, especially as a favour, including forgiveness and kindness. Gifts are also first and foremost presented on occasions - birthdays and Christmas being the main examples.
